An Interview with Nadine Hays Pisani // Author of Happier Than A Billionaire: Quitting My Job, Moving to Costa Rica, and Living the Zero Hour Work Week
1) Where were you born, where do you live now, and are you close to perfect swimming water?
I was born in Elizabeth, NJ and raised under the bright lights of an Exxon refinery. I now live in Costa Rica where the water is perfect and free of fossil fuels.
2) What is your favorite smell?
Cut grass, it reminds me of Saturday morning cartoons.
3) Tell us about your education and what you do now (jobs and hobbies).
I received a Biology Degree at Rutgers, and Chiropractic Degree at New York Chiropractic. Both of these required a lot of work and dedication, and also made me realize I didn’t want to do either. I am now a writer and like to take pictures of cute monkeys, kinkajous, and sloths in my spare time.
4) Tell us about your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife. How did you meet? What is your favorite thing about him/her? How about your children (if you have children)? How about a dog or cat?
I met my husband in chiropractic school where he lied to me that he had owned a car. Five minutes before he was supposed to arrive on our first date, he called to say he was “temporarily out of transportation” and wondered if I could pick him up. He then took all of his student aid money to buy me a piece of jewelry. We’ve been together ever since.
5) Is ignorance bliss?
When reading bad reviews: Yes.
6) How did you get interested in writing?
I wrote something that made my friend laugh. I never made someone laugh with chiropractic. I then knew my true calling.
7) How has your practice evolved over the course of time?
I make sure I write 1000 words a day. Sometimes they are good words, sometimes they are bad. But putting them down feels like I did my job.
8) What do you consider to be your greatest success?
Quitting smoking when I was 25. My teeth are now yellowing from coffee instead of nicotine. Perhaps I should give up coffee as well.
9) Is there any thing that your family or friends would be surprised to learn about you?
Quitting smoking when I was 25. My teeth are now yellowing from coffee instead of nicotine. Perhaps I should give up coffee as well.
10) What did you find out after finishing HAPPIER THAN A BILLIONAIRE: QUITTING MY JOB, MOVING TO COSTA RICA, AND LIVING THE ZERO HOUR WORK WEEK? What weren’t you expecting?
I learned I looked for success in all the wrong places. Success is living a simple life, filled with gratitude for even the smallest things. I was not expecting the reaction to the book, the emails from people who were caught up in the rat race like I was. Even though I wrote a story about a personal journey, it is a similar one others are struggling with.
